2017 Oakridge Pinot Meunier

You don’t see a lot of pinot meunier about, but those who are brazen enough to make it as a straight variety are some fierce folk to watch. Especially if Campbell Mattinson comes out and deadpan calls it “one of the best buys on the Australian wine landscape”, no caveats. And then, more importantly, “My gosh. Young, fresh red wine can barely be more, well, more-ish.” 

Smells to me like a savoury pinot noir meets gamay, all red cranberries and brambly, musky black cherries and rhubarb. Insistent but delicate florals frolic around. The palate’s great, a bit more structured than many a pinot noir, fruit meeting the texture head-on. Lithe but insistent. Long, drying and chalky, too. Nom. Yes, more-ish.
